I was astonished this morning to see Alison McGovern – who is otherwise on the more sensible wing of the Labour Party – lambast times tables as a relic from ‘1950’, as the government doubles down on its plans to improve the maths teaching from the doldrums it found itself in in 2010.

This isn’t the first time that Labour has attacked children learning times tables. In 2016, Labour’s Shadow Education Secretary said children shouldn’t be ‘forced’ to learn their times tables.

I wonder what about people learning basic arithmetic makes the economically-illiterate Labour Party nervous?
