The Magdala pub is set to reopen this June, after a hard-fought campaign by local residents backed by Hampstead Conservatives.

Councillor Tom Currie lead the campaign to grant the Magdala the status of Asset of Community Value. This makes it harder for developers to close pubs by requiring separate planning permission for any change of use and giving the local community six months to bid for pubs that are up for sale.

Work to renovate the Magdala began months ago, but I’ve been contacted by a few people that were concerned that work was hesitant and were worried it would follow the Old White Bear into uncertain stasis. However, the landlord has confirmed his intention to reopen the pub in June.

The Magdala’s new website can be found at When it reopens, we’ll be joining residents to toast the Magdala’s secured future with some well-earned pints!
